Grover Cleveland became president in 1885. The transcontinental railroad was not finished and the telephone was still a novelty (or as we film buffs say, just a twinkle in Don Ameche's eye - with apologies to Groucho Marx.). Cleveland brought to the White House his quiet dignity and honesty. While he was in office, he sometimes had to answer the door himself. The country was beginning to recover from the Civil War and the President had to guide the country through the beginning of the Industrial Age.

All of these excellent audiobook history tapes are read by Ira Glaffey. They are all also part of a series called "The American President." The general editor of this series is historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.
