"Superman Returns" is a new version of the Superman saga. Where the movies featuring Steven Reeve were reasonably faithful to the classic comic books, this time The Man Of Steel has just come back to Earth after spending five years in space looking for the remnants of his home planet Krypton. He comes back to his job as Clark Kent, the reporter for the Daily Planet. Once again he faces the arch-villain Lex Luthor, played by Kevin Spacey who gives the role a seriously evil foundation as opposed to the comical character Gene Hackman gave us. Kate Bosworth is the intrepid Lois Lane, and she is delightful here. Fans of the genre will be satisfied, if not delighted, with this outing, but its not as appealing to general audiences in its own right. The cinematography and special effects are nicely done and the performances are quite good, especially newcomer Brandon Routh who makes Superman a more complex personality than Reeve was ever allowed to be.
