Bernie Rhodenbarr is the owner of the Antiquarian Book store. That's his daytime job. By night he is a burglar. Bernie is quite accomplished at getting into places that do their best to try to keep burglars out. Bernie is a content man. Manhattan is his home and he lives quite well with his Manx cat named Raffles.

Now Bernie is restless and goes on the prowl. He prowls his way into a lot of trouble. Murder is on the menu for this caper. Four murders stun the city, and then Bernie's own apartment gets robbed. Our Bernie has to figure his way out of the mess or he will get killed... or sent up for life.

This is a rousing good mystery! I like Bernie even when the movie industry made the error of making Bernie into Bernice and casting Whoopie Goldberg into the part. Whoopie would be great in almost anything else. Lawrence Block has written a lot of stories based on Bernie, that too-clever thief. He has some good friends and is a really good burglar himself.
