Welcome again to the world of Andy Brazil, the state trooper, and Police Superintendent Judy Hammer. These two are supposed to clean up a troubled police precinct located in Virginia. There has been a series of menacing crews of highway pirates. They seem to be connected with a deadly and deranged female who calls herself by the bizarre name of "Unique First." Along the way, the two crusaders have to grapple with public officials and politicians. Andy has decided to make the community aware of police problems by writing a column on the Internet. He calls the site "Trooper Truth" and is trying to tie the violent history of the country to the problems of today.

The Governor is so alarmed that Andy's columns are certain to create trouble that he decides to draw the public's attention to his own plans to keep people safe. He has decided to set up speed traps on an island close by where there are almost no cars. The Governor sends a helicopter to take down license plate numbers and issue warrants. But the locals are furious and decide to secede from the state. Their first move is take as a prisoner the island's only dentist, who is a commuter to the island (and apparently a very bad dentist to boot).

This is all just the beginning of another amusing mystery from the talented Patricia Cornwell. Her plots are always good and her humor really shows up in this effort.
