European murder mysteries are often a welcome relief from the penchant of American writers to give us grisly affairs. This is the story of Finnish police detective Kimmo Joentaa. Crushed by the recent death of his wife, he drowns himself in his work to stave off the grief. He begins to investigate a series of puzzling murders that is causing widespread fear in the local populace and Kimmo is under enormous pressure to solve the crimes.

Told through the thoughts of Joentaa, with occasional flashes into the mind of the killer, the book is an unusual psychological thriller. As Joentaa investigates, he begins to form a picture of the mind of the killer, which rather predictably leads him to his capture. Let's hope that the next time we see Kimmo, there's more mystery to wrap our imaginations in.
