Collaborate or perish! That's the message of Stephen Joyce's new book. The simple act of working with another person or organization can mean the difference between success and failure, but unless the merger is handled properly, the result can be a disaster. So how do we learn how to cooperate when all of our life we have been taught to do things for ourselves? Joyce boils it down to some key skills like team building and goal setting. I thought the format of the book got in the way sometimes, but there's no denying that there's an important message here. As the world gets flatter, to borrow the phrase from Tom Friedman, we know we must find partners who can deliver those materials and services that we can't provide here in the US at a world-competitive price. And this idea of collaboration must be expanded to include the idea of working across intra-company boundaries, too.
