Edward Gorey died in the year 2000 and the world lost a genius of the graphic arts. His prodigious volumes of weird tales and creepy drawings delighted me as well as many other devoted fans. His humor was even darker than the popular Addams Family cartoons that ran for years in The New Yorker. He was himself a character in his beard and tennis shoes looking every bit the artist of the weird that he was. He vowed that it was his desire to make everyone as uneasy as possible. His tale of "The Hapless Child" was truly a sad story of a child for whom the world was filled with terror and darkness and came to a tragic end.

Author Alexander Theroux details the life and works of Gorey in this brief little book. He has also filled it with drawings from Gorey's works that are gems to enjoy. Theroux was as much of a Gorey fan as I am, and I am grateful for his insightful look into the life of a real artist with an enormous talent for dark humor.
