The history of America's most enduring music genre of the 20th Century is told through the times and the lives of the people who made it with their own music. Some of the stories of the great producers of Jazz are filled with tragedy. A few found fame in their lifetime, like Louis Armstrong. Some are remembered best for just their music, which still is favored today by the likes of me. The history is presented very complete here and well worth hearing. Students will relish owning these historic memories and some of us who still remember folks like Buddy Bolden will be dazzled by all the tales.

This story of Jazz encompasses the story of America and all it's struggles through depression, war, interracial strife, and growth. I found Levar Burton's young voice less than convincing as an historian, although his voice is pleasant.
