According to the author, this is the true story of what really happened to Hansel and Gretel. The words are from Gretel herself and it is reputed to be a faithful reproduction of her original diary. Gretel is also the artist.

It begins with an entry that announces the death of their mother. Daddy remarries and now they have a "stupid Stepmother who is planning to send us out to the forest to get lost."

Well, you know about the useless bread crumb trail and the delicious candy cottage owned by a witch. The story is all so familiar, but the plucky Gretel is really the one who saved them. She is a smart-mouthed kid and, after all, it is her diary. There are lots of pop-ups to enjoy and they add to the fun.
