Once upon a time, there were a lot of these interesting little diners along the highways wherever you went. The promise of good service and good food would draw the whole family into one of these attractive informal eateries. Here is a book that covers the history of the diner, which began more than 100 years ago. Fast food chains took over in the late 1950's and became more popular in the 1960's. This delightful book gives us some 450 recipes for the food that was found on diner menus nationwide.

The authors also interviewed owners and chefs who have worked in diners. As an added bit useful information there are some one hundred black and white pictures of these places where Americans used to go out to eat when Mom was tired from a long day of housework and child-rearing. This is, after all, a very American tradition.
