House is a Fox TV series (Tues. 9PM) about a cranky doctor in the manner of Dr. Kildare. This doctor has more reason to be grouchy because he is in constant pain from the injury to his leg. House is a hit in our family. First off, Hugh Laurie, the star of the series, is one of my favorite actors. He has been in several British comedies (Black Adder, Jeeves & Wooster, A Bit of Fry and Laurie), although most Americans know him best as the father in the Stuart Little movies.

Laurie takes on this gritty role of a diagnostic genius who revels in exposing emotional weakness in patients and colleagues while concealing his own feelings. He is brilliant and never follows the rules. He has gathered several bright young doctors to act as his team. House takes on cases that defeats most other doctors, and usually after nearly killing the patient, he saves them in the end.

Laurie is unquestionably a multi-talented actor, but his ability to play this dramatic role came as a bit of a surprise. Included on this disk is the pilot episode of House, DNR, The Socratic Method, Poison and much more. It may take a few episodes, but I am sure that most of you will be as addicted as I am to this brilliant, acerbic Doctor who saves lives but never wants to see his patients.
