This is the autobiography of Dwight Hoover who grew up on a small Iowa farm in the 1920's. It documents the evolution of agricultural practices from the late 19th Century through the mid-20th Century in great detail. The first person narrative does come out a little dry as you follow Mr. Hoover's life and that of his extended family through The Great Depression and through to the start of World War II. The Hoover's got their start when Dwight's grandfather bought a farm in Iowa in the late 1800's and was amazingly adept at farming and ancillary skills like horse trading. His sons did not inherit all of those traits, but managed to do alright until the Depression hit.

Its easy to dismiss a book like this because of its narrow focus on a single family, but its the straightforward family history told in the easily recognizable style of a modest Midwesterner who wanted to share this unique story while it is still relevant and accessible.
