David Hewson gives us another in the series of meysteries featuring Nic Costa, the detective in the Rome police. This story revolves around the ancient tunnels that lie beneath that ancient city. Fourteen years earlier, a seven year-old boy, the son of a noted professor of archeology had disappeared in one of those tunnels. One of Costa's colleagues who had been a part of that old investigation is attacked, apparently in revenge for the boy. The father, having recently been in jail for beating one of his students, is a prime suspect, but there's little evidence to go on.

The story often flashes back to the past when the tunnels were created, giving the story a more complete background and a richer tale than your standard whodunnit. We get to know the young boy Alessio and his father Giorgio, and we share the impact of the tragedy. Its an engaging mystery with a most unexpected outcome.
