Disney's string of successful translations of its animated features to the stage continues with the production of 'Tarzan'. This lavishly illustrated book by Michael Lassell starts with the history of Tarzan in books and films, with due deference to Johnny Weismuller, through Disney's animated incarnation of the legendary figure and how the producers created the new presentation for Broadway. Like 'The Lion King' and 'Beauty and the Beast' before it, 'Tarzan' starts with the story and the music. The book shows how Phil Collins' score was updated in collaboration with David Henry Hwang created the 'book' for this, the most challenging Disney stage production to date. There are page after page of pictures and text to show the choreography and stage effects. Short of a 'Making Of' film, this book is the best way to explore exactly how this spectacular play was created.
