Inspector Alleyn is a cat of a different color. He is very proper - the epitome of British Reserve. Always well-dressed and always politely stiff. This DVD brings some bonus features that include author Ngaio Marsh’s biography, and extra information about the cast of this series.

Alleyn is a Scotland Yard detective during the mid 1900's, which explains his breeding and his bearing. He has a lady friend who is delightful and very independent. Her name is Agatha Troy, well-played by Belinda Lang. He also has a partner, of course, as all good detectives do, Inspector Fox (William Simons). Inspector Alleyn is performed with all the airs needed by Patrick Malahide who was a treat in "The Singing Detective."

There are four excellent episodes in this set. You will be baffled during "Death At The Bat" where an eminent lawyer dies at a village inn. It might have been a poison dart that killed him, but the question remains: Who-dun-it? "Final Curtain" has Troy painting a portrait of a famous actor. Wait until you meet the actor's bizarre family. Its an engaging murder mystery that follows the travails of an acting troupe. There are two more mysteries to savour here. I think you will enjoy this series if you are a PBS Mystery! fan like we are in my family.
