Welcome to our archive of November 2007 audiobook reviews. A good
audiobook is very much like the old time radio programs (which are fun to download) because they put on a stage
performance entirely with sound. We can't get enough of them, and now they're available on both cassette and CD, and
many websites now allow you to download audiobooks (as well as e-books) for iPods and other MP3 players. Whether you like to
call it a book on tape, an audiobook, or even a podcast, we present our audiobook reviews for your enjoyment.

The Chase The legendary Clive Cussler gives us an amazing historical thriller here in "The Chase". In the early 1900s, the western US was terrorized by a string of bank robberies committed by a man dubbed "The Butcher Bandit" because he killed all of the witnesses. The government assigns their best detectivem Isaac Bell. Bell chases his quarry through five states and even the great San Francisco earthquake with only limited success. He knows he's making the Bandit nervous because the Bandit has started to chase Bell. With the backdrop of history combined with the kinds of characters that Cussler creates so deftly that you almost don't notice it until the last page, "The Chase" is a real thrill ride through a fantasy version of the early 20th Century. |

Listening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project Dave Isay founded the StoryCorps Project four years ago to capture stories of the lives of everyday Americans. Its sort of a combination of the old Charles Kuralt's "On The Road" stories for CBS News and Ira Glass's "This American Life" on NPR. He calls it an "oral history" broken into sections titled "Home and Family", "Work and Dedication", "Journeys", "History and Struggle", and finally "Fire and Water" which focuses on people's experiences from 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Its a wonderful experience to listen to these people share some of their most precious memories - both the good times and the bad. This isn't about celebrity or politics. Its just ordinary people sharing their lives with us with a poignancy that springs from the vagaries of fate that sometimes brings joy and other times tragedy. You'll want a lot of Kleenex in the car, trust me. |
